About

Lakewood

The Lakewood subdivisions have their origins in a country club, known as the West End Country Club.  The club's main building was built in 1918, and the surrounding lands were purchased in 1923.  Financial difficulties caused a reorganization, in which the name was changed to the Lakewood Country Club in 1938.

The popularity of golf helped the club to retain its 18 hole golf course, even as suburbs developed all around it, into the 1950's.  Then, in 1959, with the Pontchartrain Expressway already under development, a Texas real estate developer (Jack Neece) purchased the club for $2 million and announced plans to develop what today is known as Lakewood North.  The 98 home sites, which sold for $12,000 to $15,000, reportedly sold out in a single weekend.  Development of Lakewood South began in 1961, with lots selling for $15,000 to $23,000.

Today, the Lakewoods remain as thriving and well maintained subdivisions, populated by a mix of the original homeowners as well as many new young families.  They are conveniently located at the Intersection of Interstate I-10, I-610 and the Pontchartrain Expressway,  providing rapid access to the CBD, regional shopping centers in Metairie, and Armstrong Airport.

Convenience is complemented by security.  The Lakewoods are considered among the safest and most crime free subdivisions in the New Orleans area.  They are naturally protected by the 17th Street Canal to the west, the adjacent cemetaries, the Southern Railroad tracks to the south, and the expressway to the north and east.  A 24 hour private security patrol enhances security and provides escort services and property surveillance (especially useful when homeowners are away on vacation or otherwise).

Public schools include Hynes Elementary School and the Benjamin Franklin magnet high school, recognized as two of the City's best public schools.  Neighborhood children also attend both private schools (including Newman, Country Day, Stuart Hall, St. Martin's, Trinity and St. George's) and parochial schools (including Sacred Heart, Jesuit, St. Francis Xavier, St. Catherine of Siena, St. Dominick and Mount Carmel).  Bus service for Lakewood is available for several popular private schools.
